i have an hdmi port in the back of my acer m5100 desktop. is it an input or output? i want to capture hd video?
with the canon hv30 using premiere pro cs3. can i do that? or do i need one of these expensive SOB's

Ok..Little Dog is right about that port.
As for using a Blackmagic card to capture through HDMI means you are going to need one hell of a lot of hard drives as uncompressed HD results in massive files. If you do go down that route then capture at a lower res to edit with offline and then online it afterwards with full res. Dealing with the uncompressed HD will stress all but the most powerful industry spec machines and your desktop will definitely not handle it because of several factors..the processor and drive speed being the main ones.
It all depends on what your end market is really. If it's going for cinematic release then maybe it's worth it but for broadcast HD or SD.. or just disc then don't bother and work with HDV through Firewire. HDV compression is good and on LCD screens no-one will ever be able to tell the difference with the naked eye between HDV and uncompressed HD from a consumer camera such as the one you have. The real difference would come from shooting with a camera from the RED series where you're working at 4k or so.
I don't know who gave you the information about working with HDV on Firewire would be too lossy for your purpose..but tell them to go and do some real production work. We use Firewire HDV for all our broadcast or cinematic work where it's cut into 16mm film seamlessly because of the JVC ProHD cams we use. That is very much the industry standard practice too.
Just plug in the Firewire and get on with making your films..

Ultrascope integrates the most widely used six kinds of video / audio monitor mode:
Provided for the color division Parade show: when the video color, real-time RGBParade waveform is the most appropriate viewing method. You can see the color of black, white, gray to control the color balance so that images look more perfect. RGBParade very suitable for checking the existence of illegal colors, because in RGBParade, you can easily see below the black level or higher than the white level of illegal RGB color. Parade can also be switched to the component model for the calibration of equipment and recorders.
Provided for the calibration waveform display: Ultrascope is suitable for adjusting the video level, or during key operation, the background matches the black level. Waveform View as a pure or composite brightness setting options. Synthesized from the SDI composite video input, this way the waveform view used for calibration equipment, recorders and other traditional methods when the results are much better than the other.
Component vector observation in mode: for the video palette, in order to achieve accurate white balance, we must know whether the colors are removed or no longer valid. Vector Tester Accurate identification of video in the end what color, can also be used to add color accurate (Tint).
Histogram for field shooting: histogram can distinguish between video clips in the pixel location, and they from black to white how they are distributed.
