They used to make very poor quality computers (IMHO), until they were bought out by HP. HP has always made good computers. I was a bit worried when HP bought Compaq. When NEC (who used to make good computers) bought Packard Bell (who always made junk), suddenly all the NEC computers were manufactured by the Packard Bell factories and were incredibly poor quality (the increase in production quantities lead to even lower quality).
Dell makes good desktop computers, and good rack mounted servers. But their laptops are very hit and miss. For a while they will make a good product, but then they will have some cost cutting measures, and what always gets cut is quality control. Then when consumers start complaining about the quality, they will put quality control back in place, which will drive up their costs and eat into their profits. This pendulum swings back and forth, and when you buy a dell laptop, you never know where you are going to hit them in this cycle of quality. (IBM/Lenovo does the same thing, in terms of quality).

This is because the internal circuit of the battery must match the laptop hardware for optimum charging and discharging. However, this is not always the case so check with your manufacturer of the laptop if the battery can be interchangeable.
