SWL receive only antenna?
What's wrong with this terrific idea? Just got tip to splice 6 conductor A/V so that each individual wire is connected to the next so a 300' run will produce 1,800' of continuous wire. So.. how about I take the 1800' of wire inside 300' of cable and loop it so I can attach each end to coaxial cable? Then feed the coax into a scanner that receives SW. Do I need to consider overloading? What type of coax? RG 6, 8? Is all I have to do is connect one end to center pin, and the other end to shielding? The cable is about 50 feet in the air and I will be able to make something close to a circle. How about soldering a stranded, covered wire to each end of the loop and attaching with alligator clips to scanner?
Well, the loop is a good idea, but the coax isn't really necessary.
Coax is unbalanced line, which simply means that the current only runs through one part of the line. The center conductor of coax carries the current, while the braid is connected to ground
The most common way of using coax with a wire antenna is in a dipole, in which the center conductor is connected to one side of the antenna, and an insulator between the two sides, and the braid (ground) is connected to the other side. It provides a counterpoise to the radiating side of the antenna. These are used for transmitting, which is why I meant a radiator.
There are two ways you can go with a long length of wire, one you can use it as a loop, as you mentioned, and feed a dual point connector to your radio, but fed with balanced line. Balanced line carries current in both sides. A simple kind of balanced line could be TV feed line, twin lead, its called, that is two wires, separated by insulation, that stays in one form, and isn't likely to be shorted by twisting in the wind.
Other types are called ladder line. It looks sort of like TV twin lead, but its wider, and there are openings in the center of the wire, making it look more like a lot of capital H's stacked on top of each other, rather than a ribbon of wire.
These have different impedance's, as do the different types of antennas. Impedance is not necessarily important with receiving antennas, but it looks as though the 1800 feet of your wire would be resonant at 1.7 MHz, smack in between the AM broadcast band and the 160 meter ham band.
If fed with balanced lines, it would appear that your loop would be vertically polarized, which usually has a low angle of radiation, great for skip signals from a long distance. Depending on how high your scanner is working, it would be good for MF and HF signals, like the AM broadcast band, through the 30 MHz, but depending on the kind of antennas above 30 MHz, particularly in the UHF spectrum (300 MHz-3000MHz) the polarization is more important. If most signals are vertically polarized, like a whip on a police car, an antenna on a aviation tower, or the antennas used on Ham repeaters, a horizontal antenna will be receiving the signal, but they may sound distorted.
the other thing about feeding it with balanced lines, is that it will have more of a directional quality. One kind of loop, a rhombic, will have the strongest signals from the opposite end from where its fed. That is, for transmission,if you feed it at the southwest corner, the strongest signal will be in a northeast direction.
For an SWL antenna, where you are listening to lots of different signals, I wouldn't think you'd want too much directivity, unless you were pointing right at Europe or Asia, for particular stations of interest.
If you want a more omnidirectional signal, you can connect, say wire F to an insulator, and the other side of the insulator to a support, and connect a single conductor to the wire F side of the insulator, and that wire runs into the receiver. To be sure, I'd use an insulator to set off the A side of the antenna as well.
One other thing to remember, antennas can be vulnerable to lightening, so get yourself a switch to switch the input from the antenna directly to ground, or, more simply, disconnect the antenna from the radio when the clouds gather and the weather service says to keep a look out.
Braided Copper Wires
The braiding of copper wires is also done to Electrolytic Copper Wire (the purest form of copper wire) after being drawn and annealed. The main point is that that identical wires only are Braided together. This is done for all the different varieties of copper wire like Bare Copper, Silver Plated, Tin Plated, which are then put to different uses depending on their utility. These uses are Shielding Cable, for making wire for Earthing, soldering, Wire Assembly, CRT Earthing, MCV, Control Panel, Switch Gear Box, etc.
The braided copper wire is put through a conductor for making a standard copper wire. The conductor's two terminals are made of copper pipes with surface coating of tin or silver. It connector is made according to the specifications given by the customers. The wire is passed through special processing to make its joints flexible and also its grounding. The copper wires' conductance ratio is high i.e. it is a good conductor of electricity and it fatigues very late, in other words it is long-lasting rather than brittle.
Size of manufactured copper wire braids can range from 1/32nd part of an inch to 3 inches in width. These copper braids can be made from bare copper, nickel plated copper, tinned copper, silver plated copper, nickel wire and stainless steel among other materials.
Braided copper wire may be provided in tubular or rolled out form according to the purpose for which it is going to be used based on the business requirements of the clients. Flat braids are used in general for electrical leads, flexible connections and grounding straps. The tubular braids are used for shielding on the whole.
In order to make specific sizes of these wires, one needs to place special request with the manufacturers as mostly certain standardized dimensions are produced in order to cater to the majority of market demand. Some seasoned copper wire manufacturers have the necessary expertise to produce some special applications as well as invent altogether new ones if instructed accordingly.
Some standard applications of copper wire are: the stranded copper wire used for flexible joining wire in devices and applications of transmission of electricity and distribution machines like electric stove, volt transformer, thyristor, electric equipment etc. This type of wire may also be used as grounding wire in electrical works, popularly known as Earthing.
The flexible stranded copper wire is made from very fine quality round copper wire or tinned round copper wire , This product has passed tenacity processing, so the complete - product is soft and its outline is beautiful.
Some other uses of braided copper wire are the following: as flexible joining wire of electric appliances, switch appliances electric stoves and storage batteries etc.
