How is the size of a hard drive measured? And can I put a 2.5" SATA drive in a hole that is made for a 3.5"?
That is, is the SATA connection the same no matter the size of the hard drive, or how universal are they? And is a hard drive size measured in length, width, the hypotenuse, or what?
A hard drive is basically a bunch of floppy disks stacked in a case that supplies the interface between them and the computer. (Not real floppy disks as we used to use in a floppy drive, but that should give you the idea. The 2.5"/3.5" (and some old ones used 5.25") is the diameter of the disks used. The smaller diameter disks can fit in a smaller case, thus allowing them to use less space inside the computer. (very important in a laptop especially)
The connectors are usually the same for the different types independent of size.
The smaller size of the disk also limits the data handling size, so you will find higher capacities available in the 3.5" vs the 2.5" drives. IE: 1 Tb (1000 Gig) is becoming common in 3.5", but it's difficult to find a 2.5" with more than 500 Gig, with 160 - 250 Gig being the most common.
What You Do When BIOS Fails to Detect Hard Drive
When a computer system is powered up, BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is the first program (a firmware that is software on hardware) executed by a computer system. The BIOS detects, tests and initializes system devices like hard drives, optical drives, keyboard, display screen etc. After the BIOS check is over, computer system files take control to detect the hardware and software environment. Among all computer storage media, hard disk is the most common one due to its large storage capacity and cost-effectiveness. When the hard drive fails due to hardware issues, BIOS fails to detect it. This generally happens when hard disk suffers physical issues related to one or more of its internals. Attempting to run such failed hard drives can cause more damage to your data. The first function of BIOS is to run POST (Power-On Self Test) that is stored on a predetermined address in memory. - Hard disk is inappropriately connected to the system. Power cable or interface cable is damaged or not attached to the mainboard.
- Jumper settings are not correct.
- Hard drive controllers are disabled in BIOS.
To solve the issue, you need to follow these steps:
- Set your BIOS settings to default
- Verify all cables are in good condition and are properly connected
- Check jumper settings. If you have attached two hard drives to a port/connector, make sure that one of them is configured as master and other as slave
- Make sure that all/in-use hard disk controllers are enabled
