DUAL NIC PORTS.... how to do this on a home XP computer?
im always looking to upgrade my computer, and recently i started to look at the ethernet connectivity
i saw some motherboards out there with dual ethernet ports, and people talking about have two NIC cards in their computers,
my mother board had a built it NIC chip, and i have found many cheap NIC board out there
im wondering, can i get a NIC board hook it up and then have my integrated NIC and my NIC board working together? so that i can send twice as many packets as with just one NIC
ive also head of people using one nic for uploading and one for downloading,
is this possible on a windows XP home edition, with a built in NIC
The NIC i have now is a BroadCom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit controller
You can hook up two nic cards or more. I currently have a 10/100 network card built into my motherboard as well as 10/100/1000 network card in a PCI slot and both function each as its own separate network connection. If I was to plug in a USB network card I could have that be a third network if I wanted it to be.
Keep in mind that the two network cards are NOT acting together to double your bandwidth or one upload and one download like you suggested.
If you want to increase your local network speed I would suggest you get a 10/100/1000 network card and a router that has a built in 10/100/1000 network switch as well. Remember though it is only going to increase your local traffic not the traffic speed on the other side of the router or your download speed prior to the router for that matter.
If you are trying to increase your internet speed contact your ISP about purchasing more bandwidth. In many cases you can increase not only your download speed but also your upload speed as well. You may even want to consider a T1 line of you own if internet speed or traffic is that important to you.
