Should bilingualism be pushed at a young age?
Should bilingualism be pushed in elementary schools?
I mean should young people start learning spanish in elementary schools? what are the disadvantages? advantages? what about native spanish speakers, should they learn enlish in elementary school?
I don't think it hurts. I went to a bilingual school from K-8th grade. I learned German (ESL). I then moved on to take it again in high school as my second language credits. It didn't make much of a difference in my life. I never used it in any jobs or careers but it didn't hurt either. Its actually nice knowing I have a crap load of info somewhere in my brain in a different language that just needs a little tweaking if I ever decide I want to use it in my life or career choices
I grew up in the inner city and parents decided to send me there rather than public schools. I also had the option to go to Germany in 8th grade but opted out because I was a shy girl that couldnt handle being away from my entiire family for a month as a foreign exchange student. Now, I regret not snatching that opportunity. My family also had a foreign exchange student from Germany live with us for a month so I guess there was a lot of opportunity

PS- to answer your other part of the question, I went to school with a lot of spanish and Asian speaking people that were learning English. I think that was great because I had a few friends that told me they were going home and teaching there own parents to speak English

Whether you're looking for a tutor for your second grader in science or your sixth grader in reading, you'll need to know how to make the best decision. There are many things to consider when you're looking for a tutor. The first consideration is whether to hire a certified teacher, a student or volunteer who will help.

Another disadvantage to having a student tutor your child is that your child may get a crush on the older student and not pay attention to the subject matter.
If you hire a student watch them and see if he or she is really interested in tutoring and if they have the ability to teach at all. A person can know how to read or add, but may not be able to get the subject across to someone else.
Another option is to find a suitable volunteer and you may find one easily if your child's school has teacher's aids. The aid has some classroom experience and has been taught useful information and skills from the teacher he or she works with. Along with this knowledge the aid has had experience in teaching one on one and knows about controlling a child's behavior, which may be necessary in order to get the student to pay attention.
If the aid wants to be compensated for tutoring your child, the price should be lower than a teacher would charge and this may accommodate your budget, as well as give you some of the advantages that having a trained teacher would offer.
