2004 Chevy Impala - how do I get my fan (heat/air) to quit squealing?
The blower is working fine, the fan though squeals at certain speeds. When I turn it full blast it doesn't usually squeal, but it has. So, it is either full blast or off. The noise is way too irritating. I just need to know what it could be and if I can get at it myself somehow to see what's going on and what are the chances I won't have to take it in to have it fixed? Thanks.
I own a shop, and have encountered this problem many times over the years. The blower motor has a bushing type bearing at each end of the shaft, and when it gets worn out it allows the shaft to move to one side or the other, rather than run straight as it should. When the shaft moves to one side it makes a squealing sound that can be rather annoying. There is no way to get oil to these bearing because they are sealed, so the only thing one can do is replace the motor. A new motor doesn't come with a new fan on it, so you must use your old fan on the new motor. They are pretty easy to change, and only takes about an hour or less to do. If it was me, I would just take it in to the shop, and have it done before it quits working, and it will if left unattended. I have sprayed WD-40 into one, and got it to quieten down, but it doesn't last very long before its right back to the same old noise.

How Fireplace Fans Help Your Fireplace

As the electric fireplace generates large amounts of heat for your home, this gives rise to another problem. You need some way to help spread the heat around so that you can heat up a larger area. For example, you can install a fireplace fan and that will help heat up several rooms instead of one.
Fireplace fans (or fireplace blowers), can only work well with electric fireplaces. That's because you don't want any smoke or burning materials flying around the house. Since electric fireplaces don't need fuel to generate heat, they are ideal partners for the fans.
To operate the fan, simply start up the fireplace and allow the electricity to heat up the coil. You will soon be able to feel the heat. One great benefit of having a blower installed is that you tend to save more energy. When you don't have a blower, the only way to bring heat to remote corners of your house is to increase the power of the electric fireplace. But when you increase the power, you also use up more electricity. So why not just have a fan spread the heat around, and at the same time, save on electricity bills?
