Should I spend the extra $500 to buy a new 2.5 GHz Macbook Pro or stick to the cheaper 2.4 GHz model?
Apple has just announced upgrades to their MacBook Pro laptops. The 15" 2.4 GHz model comes with a 200 GB hard disk and costs $1850. The 15" 2.5 GHz model comes with a 250 GB hard disk and costs $2350. Is it worth the extra money? I can't seem to find any other differences between the two other than these two specs.
As a first time Mac buyer I just want to know what you guys think about the investment. Seems like a lot of money for little extra benefit but is the 2.5 GHz really a lot faster?
Also, any sites to purchase macs at a good price would be welcome.
OK I checked and here are the differences between the $1850 and $2350 models:
$1850:
L2 Cache 3MB
Hard Disk 200GB
Graphics 256MB
$2350:
L2 Cache 6MB
Hard Disk 250GB
Graphics 512MB
Everything else is identical.
I know little about L2 Cache and Graphics so how much are these upgrades really worth? Anyone? Thanks all for the help!!!
If those are the only differences, then $500 is way too much. you will not notice the difference in processor speed, and the extra hard drive space in dollar terms is worth less than $50. (im talking about the difference of buying a 200gb vs a 250gb, not the upgrade cost from 200 to 250)
Not worth it, unless there is some additional feature you are not aware of. Then the question would be, is this worth it to you for the $450 its costing.?

The new13-inch Apple MacBook Pro laptops now come with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, have ram upto 4GB, battery life that is up to 10 hours and graphics accelerated by Nvidia's 320 M graphics card. Nvidia's GeForce 320 is the fastest integrated graphics processor in the market thanks to its 48 processing cores which makes it an ideal choice for graphics intensive applications like photo shop or high performance games. This 13-inch Apple laptop is available in two different configurations, one comes with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 250GB hard drive, and the other one comes with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and a 320GB hard drive.
Apple's new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro laptops are capable of being up to twice as fast than the previous models of these laptops. These laptops use intel's latest 32 nanometer process which come in 2 choices. The memory controller comes integrated with them and the new Intel Core i5 and i7 processors incorporate Level 3 cache for much faster access to the system memory. Intel's Hyper-Threading technology also greatly improves data throughput by giving the pc virtual multiple cores. Along with that intel's ownTurbo Boost improves performance of the two processor cores by accelerating the processor from 2.66 GHz to 3.06 GHz for dual core tasks, and up to 3.33 GHz for tasks that use only single cores.
This Apple Laptop has a Multi-Touch trackpad made of glass now supports kinetic scrolling, which makes it easy to scroll through large a photo library, or long web sites. All Apple MacBook come with a bright led backlit display. The 17-inch Macbook has a high resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, and the 15-inch laptops now come with an high resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels. Customers also have an option to upgrade their laptop to the latest super fast solid state drives that come in the sizes of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.
