A Perfect Storm!
A perfect storm!
Every once in a great while an event occurs that completely changes us in ways we can't imagine. Within Information Technology it is even more prevalent. As you look back on some of the most revolutionary events within the IT industry in the past 30 some odd years, you get the sense that it is not always about the innovation itself. It is usually a culmination of several factors that together propels the Widget, Application, or Process into the forefront of our daily lives. It is much like the multiple weather conditions that come together to make that proverbial perfect storm. I am not using this analogy to describe the destructive capabilities of the storm, but rather the momentum that can be generated when all the conditions within IT and Business in general are right to create that perfect storm.
I have been following the announcements of Cisco's Blade Center Solution (Unified Computing) since the middle of 2008 and it has all the makings of a perfect storm. There are rumors stating this will be a completely new blade center technology that allows for true virtualization within the data center. I was intrigued by the rumors that have been flying around, so I decide to investigate for myself. I began, like so many others, on the search engines and let the mouse do the walking. I was surprised to find so much information about Unified Computing. The reason why, is that "Unified Computing" has not been announced by Cisco yet. To clarify, a lot of people are talking about a solution that the company itself hasn't announced to the world. Is this a marketing ploy? Are they trying to hide something? Or is it the type of technology that will live up to the hype and redefine the Data Center as we know it?
I consider myself a skeptic when it comes to accusations such as these. I am a "Prove It!" type engineer, if it hasn't been verified as fact, it is fiction. It is a mantra that has saved me more than once. So I started reading the blogs, news articles, and news releases by a few of the companies that are involved with the project. I have come up with a list including EMC, VMware, BMC, Intel, and Qlogic at a minimum that apparently are part of this project. To say the least, this is an A-list team as far as the data center is concerned. I could not find specifics on the Unified Computing solution itself. No hardware or software specifications, just a lot of buzz words such as revolutionary, epitome of technological advancement, and cool with sprinkles of awesome. There was not much to go on, so instead I thought about the concept, the team members, and the current conditions... And that has the potential to make the perfect storm.
But what are these conditions or contributing factors that I am talking about?
Economic Conditions
There are two basic questions during economic down turns companies should ask themselves: How do you spend yourself out of debt and which vendors will survive the financial crisis? The First question is easy, by buying solutions that reduce your long term costs and virtualization has proven to be a cost reducing technology. You basically spend to save money. The second is best answered from a historical perspective. During tough economic times, consumers tend to migrate towards the larger, more stable providers. Cisco has been around for a long time, extremely stable with a lot of cash on hand, and has a very loyal customer base. A lot of organizations got hit hard with the bankruptcy filing of Nortel. Companies will more likely choose a more stable company when considering a purchase for the foreseeable future.
Customer Needs
Emerson wrote: "Build a better mousetrap and the world would beat a path to your door". That is a loaded statement, define better! Easier, cheaper, better security, ISO compliant? The last one is a stretch for a mousetrap, but you get my point. So we need to delve into what the solution can provide. It is the customer that determines if it meets their needs. Here is a list of what is being provided by this solution
1) Single solution provider within the Data Center
a. This is huge, it is always easier to deal with a single provider rather than 4 or 5 provider s and asking them to work well with each other
2) Total Data Center Solution
a. Network, Storage, Application services, Communications, etc... All under same umbrella
3) Simplifies Support
a. A single end-to-end support structure for the Data Center
4) Simplified Integration
a. You must always be able to play well in the sand box with others and the Data Center is a big sandbox
b. The collaborative effort from all the major players would provide a tightly integrated solution which in turn reduces installation time, problem resolution, and management overhead
c. End-to-end Solution
5) Cost Reduction Technology
Technological Advancements
This is a difficult one as the technical specifications have not been released. However, I have not seen a solution that Cisco has released that has not had a large number of technological advancements. The key is, this is not just a Cisco Solution. I would look to see tremendous advancements from some of the other partners as well. Intel, EMC and VMware, and Qlogic, could all provide some very interesting technological advancements.
The Perfect Storm:
Cisco is poised to be a major player in the Data Center market and could impact the current leaders, HP and IBM.
