computer does not detect IDE drives on reboot... but cold boot works.?
I just put together a new system for my gf... MSI k8m800, amd x2, 1g ram, win xp, 200g maxtor.... etc etc.
some odd problems...
sometimes when i reboot it doesn't detect the IDE devices and gives me the "insert system disk error". when i reboot it repeats the same message but if shut down and start up it works.
sometimes when I shut down it just hangs at the windows is shutting down screen.
sometimes when i'm in windows it runs like a slug.
but when it's none of those things... it works like a champ. I ran seti on it for hours so I know it's stable. Also ran the seagate/maxtor disk test on the new hdd... no problems.
when I first built it, i only have 1 cdrw and 1 hdd and it was working just fine. it was after I added the geforce card, 2nd hdd, and 2 dvdroms that this problem happened.
I've never come across any of these symptoms... I'd really appreciate some help.
Yes you could try and see if answer number 1 works but do you know for some things if you have an optical drive and a HardDrive on the same IDE cable it will slow it down because with one cable it can only read from 1 device at a time leaving the procceser to do most of the work, But having a HD and OD on different cables it can read from them at the same time. I would say check your BIOS for settings you may have accidently set wrong or somthing. Or you could possibly have some hardware in there that is not supported by your motherboard.
