What does MMSYSERR_ALLOCATED mean?
I got some Italian Immersion software (kind of like Rosetta Stone), and every so often I'll get a message saying "Sound open failed - device already allocated." I have no idea what this means, I looked it up online and saw that it was an MMSYSERR_ALLOCATED error, but that means nothing to me. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but it didn't help. Is there anything I can do to make this error go away? I'm really not a computer person, so I appreciate the help.
It sounds like the device the program is trying to use is "Allocated/In Use" by another process. Thus the software cant use the hardware when TWO programs are trying to take control at once. Go into your sound setting in control panel. Also looking at the LOGS in the control panel WILL tell you a lot more.

Click on Programs/System etc on the left Pane.
(Scroll down right pane)
Look for RED: ! Error (next to it and read)
