Is there such a thing as an external email notifier (e.g. a USB light)?
I've found a DIY USB kit and a discontinued product that connects to a PS-2 port. I have two computers hooked up to one screen (via a KVM switch). One computer is acting as a cash register and runs a propriatory OS. The second runs Windows XP and occasionally receives orders via email. I need a visual way to know when an email has arrived. Something such as a flashing light would be great.
I don't know about making a light flash on a usb device, but I use Eudora e-mail (it's free, http://www.eudora.com/) and there is an option in its settings to play a sound (it accepts many media file types) when it receives an incoming e-mail. If you try it, the setting is under Tools > Options > Getting Attention.
Or, if you don't want sound, maybe if you have a USB Flash drive with a light, you could put the sound file on that Flash Drive, and when it plays the sound, maybe it will make the light blink (since it is accessing it?). This would work even better if you had a floppy drive. Point to a sound file on a floppy disk, then keep the disk out. When it tries to access it, the floppy drive light will blink and it will make that noise it makes when there isn't a floppy in there

USB KVM Switch: Offer affordable and practical USB control solutions
With advances in technology, the KVM Switch was upgraded to support USB peripherals and this device came to be known as USB KVM Switch. Using this, one can control up to 32 computers with a single set of USB peripherals and switch. Supporting resolutions of 1600 X 1200 @ 60Hz along with various platforms and operating systems, they are perfect for applications that require mixed analog / digital operation. Other key features are the Auto Scan Mode for monitoring PCs, placement of CPUs away from harsh work environments and LEDs displaying the PC status. Easy to install using plug and play technology, with switching between sources done using RS232, IR remote control or front panel push buttons. The main limitation of these switches is distance, which is restricted by USB cable lengths.
The IP KVM Switch was introduced to overcome this. With the help of this device a user can monitor servers via a 128 bit secure browser from anywhere in the world over TCP/IP. A non-intrusive solution, it allows remote access and control. Compatible with almost all operating systems, these switches have optional 12, 24 and 48 volt DC power. They operate by using microcontrollers and specialized hardware to capture the signals from peripheral devices, compress and convert these into packets, and send them over an Ethernet link to a remote console application that unpacks and reconstitutes the dynamic graphical image. Due to the flexibility of accessing systems remotely, this version of the USB KVM Switch is widely used in surveillance applications.
