Lion King or Phantom of the Opera?
My mom and I were planning on seeing a Broadway show this summer. We have it narrowed down to Phantom of the Opera and Lion King, I've already seen Phantom twice but my mom hasn't and I'd be more than happy to see it again, We both have seen Lion King on Broadway before but it was years ago when I was eight so we'd have no problem seeing that again either. Which would you suggest?
We were also considering Billy Elliot although we're not as sure about it. But I know it was good. If you've seen it, what did you think of it?

'The Lion King: The Broadway Musical' first premiered at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, MN, on July 8, 1997. Based on Disney's most successful animated feature to date, 'The Lion King' tells the story of Simba, a lion cub, whose quest to take his rightful place as king of the beasts takes him on a journey of self innovation and deliverance. It deals with the death of a parent, betrayal, guilt, running away, denial, ambition, coming of age, redemption, and friendship.
Despite of being an old, familiar story, its resonance can be seen in all cultures. Even if one has seen the movie it's definitely worth seeing it on stage as the medium offers a personal appeal and interactivity that the movie just can not match. http://www.ticketmayor.com America's most innovative directors, the award winning director and designer Julie Taymor is responsible for bringing Lion King spectacular super hit from Disney on stage. This is her first musical in the commercial theatre. Having extensive experience staging epic theatre and opera productions, she has made Broadway history by becoming the first woman ever to win the Tony Award for best director of a musical. Exploring classic myths through ritualized puppetry mask and movement, Taymor has brought the same array of disciplines to 'The Lion King'.
Hundreds of masks and puppets have been created with scenic design by leading British designer Richard Hudson; lighting by Donald Holder, costume design by Julie Taymor, and choreography by Garth Fagan. Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi adapted the book who were a part of the animated feature. The entire savanna comes to life here and you can't help but marvel at the breathtaking manifestation of animals miraculously brought to life in an inferno of fabulous imagination by a cast of over 50 actors. Continuing for three hours, The Lion King employs 232 puppets, 27 kite-birds and143 people and nearly a hundred others to create its magic.
In its essence it is a human story and Taymor created giant masks that would represent characters such as Scar and Mufasa, but left the human face revealed below the mask so that the actors' facial expressions would not be lost. To put across the atmosphere of The Lion King in a live theatre, she used ingenious hazy staging techniques. For famous wildebeest stampede she created a false perspective of great distance by placing five earth-colored portals one behind the other. She then used a canvas scroll and a series of large rollers to create the illusion of thousands of racing animals. The effect in the theatre is electrifying as thousands of wildebeests seem to be rushing straight at Simba -- and at the audience! This is a spellbinding interpretation of the Disney film that stands on its own. Taymor's uphill effort and zealous endeavor manages to suspend disbelief and hypnotize the whole theatre audience.
This adaptation of the animated Disney film Lion King Broadway was the winner of six Tony Awards in 1998 including Best Musical, Choreography and Direction and has gained critical acclaim and immense popularity for its amazing special effects and incredible staging.
