There are many scientific prefixes than those commonly used.Why do we only use the ones we do ?
Common ones we use
Giga
Kilo
Mega
Micro
Milli
Nano
Pico
Tera
The reason is, numbers that we commonly use fall in these ranges.
kilo means x1000 (times 1000)
Mega means x1000000 (times 1 million)
Giga means x1000000000 (times 1 billion)
Tera means times 1 trillion (12 zeros)
Rarely do we need to use numbers that are larger than that. Even the prefix Tera has only been recently needed as hard-disk capacity on computers can exceed 1 Terabyte, and processing speed on a CPU can exceeed 1 Teraflop. The US federal deficit can be measured in Teradollars. But there isn't too much out there that needs to be described by the higher prefixes.
Going the other way:
milli means divided by 1,000
micro means divided by 1,000,000
nano means divided by 1 billion
pico means divided by 1 trillion
Again, other than for some scientific lab, there isn't much in everyday use that requires us to describe numbers that small. I use them in my line of work, but other than a millimeter, I really can't think of any real common useage of these prefixes. Colloquially, micro and nano have been used to describe very small things, but not as accurate measurement.
