Is there more than ONE kind of wireless N???
I just bought a couple of new laptops for my kids and for myself with the wireless "N" cards built-in. I want to get an updated router but the whole Wireless N terminology thing has me totally confused. Is there more than ONE kind of wireless N??? I have found the following terms used to describe it; Wireless N, MIMO, Pre-N, Draft N, Next Gen N, Xtreme N, Wireless N "Gigabit" and Wireless N1. Are these all the same thing? The network cards in my laptops use the terms "Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N" in one of them, and "Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card" in the other. I want to get the router with the best performance no matter what the cost of the router. Any help at all in clarifying this for me would be highly appreciated. Thanks a bunch in advance!
Yes there are many. 802.11N is *NOT* a full networking specification like 802.11G is. Right now it is a "draft" spec and as such may be interpreted by various makers of equipment in different ways - ways that mean you won't always be able to use various brands of equipment with each other.
If your laptops have Intel Next-Gen N you will need to buy an access point that is also Intel Next Gen N in order to ensure full compatibility.
