VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration)
Control Systems will always be a good field, because it not only embraces the various types of control (feedback, cascade, etc) but changing concepts such as fuzzy logic, optimal, etc. To me this is the best (I guess that means hottest), but one of the toughest.
VLSI is a narrow field. The techniques of design are pretty well set, the major change in the future will be physics-driven. I'd pass on this for a career.
Microsystems and Nanotech are in the serious study phase. Good if you like research and have the skills needed in these fields.
Electric Power, communications and Signal Processing require very different skills but are both in the blue-collar phase as far as how they are used. That is, they have professional tool kits, and that's what you use. You can make a living, they are interesting, not much likelihood of changing the world.
I don't know anything about Biotech. Sounds like it might be very interesting, especially if you might like helping people physically and have multiple interests.
