What maintenance needs to be done to a swamp / evaporator cooler?
I moved into a mobile home in November and just this week tried the cooler, and whatever the air temperature is outside is what is blown inside. Everything appears to function, but I'm sure nothing has been touched on the unit for at least 3 years (it sat vacant). What maintenance should I do? I understand the first thing should be to change the filter/pad; are they all a particular size, and are some better than others? I don't know the model number (haven't been on the roof yet), but it's an Essick Air - Down Discharge Evaporative Air Cooler. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!!
To get your evaporative cooler up and running try the following steps:
1. Definitely replace the cooler pads. You can use either an Aspen type pad, or a synthetic pad such as "Cool Pad". You can buy the pads in various sizes to fit the panels in your cooler, or buy a roll and just cut them to fit. The pads are usually held in with wire retainers on the inside of the cooler panels.
2. Take a wet/dry vac and vacuum out the basin of the cooler. Pay particular attention to the area around the pump. Also check the basin secton for signs of corrosion, which can lead to leaks in the cooler. Treat those areas with a good rust polymer or rust-proofing paint.
3. Check the belt for the blower. Replace it if it's cracked, frayed, or glazed. Adjust the motor so that the belt can be moved about 1/2" back and forth midway between the 2 pulleys.
4. Check to see if the blower bearings and motor bearings have oil or grease ports. If they have grease fittings, add a little bit of grease into each fitting. If they have oil ports, the motor will probably have small plastic or aluminum caps on each end of the motor shell. Remove the caps and add a few drops of machine oil into each port. If the blower bearings use oil, there will probably be a small cup on the bearings. Don't be surprised if you don't see any fittings or ports on the bearings. It's common for the bearings to be permanently sealed in an evaporative cooler.
5. Turn on the water to the cooler. Check that the float valve shuts the incoming water off an inch or so below the overflow pipe.
6. With the panels installed, start the cooler. Remove one panel at a time. The blower should be spinning, and the pump should be pumping water through a set of tubes to the top of each panel. Make sure that each of the tubes is distributing water along the tops of the pads. If everything checks out, you should get a comfortable summer out of the whole process. Good luck.
