i have a my essentials wireless g router -10/100 - what i want to know is will i see an icrease in speed if i switch to a 10/1000- my charter pipline is @ 10 meg a sec. with a gigabit ethernet port on my computer
Maybe. But probably not for the reason you thought.
If you currently have a low-end consumer router that's supports 100Mbit, you may not get anywhere near 100Mbit of throughput. Your quality of service might also be a bit poor. So if you upgrade to a higher-quality router, you may actually see a minor speed increase simply because you bought better quality hardware. Not because 1000Mbit is faster than 100Mbit.
Since you only have a 10Mbit connection and the quality of service on most cable connections is pretty awful anyway, I don't think you'll see much of a difference, if any.
You should start out by checking to see if you're getting the speed that Charter claims you're getting. Go check your connection speed at some speed testing site (such as http://www.speedtest.net/ ) and if you are getting anything over about 9Mbits then I wouldn't count on a noticeable speed increase.
So the bottom line is that it probably won't help. However, it certainly won't hurt. So if it's cheap or free, you can go for it. It will also increase the speed at which you can move files from one computer to another on your home network, which can be handy.
