Survey for feminists: are you against rap music?
Are you just against rappers such as Eminem who have made anti-women song (or so it has been said)?
What about rap artists that are pro-women and have made many pro-women songs such as Nas?
Are you ok with rap being violent as long as it doesn't degrade women?
(Just so you know, women are called the b word in rap, but men are called dogs and a b is a female dog so I guess this negate each other out.)
I'm not against any musical genre. I like rap more than I like jazz, but I really don't listen to either. When I hear rap, it just seems like a lot of complaining, it feels aggressive and repetitive...it's angry music. In that sense, it's a lot like punk. I understand the concept of female exploitation in rap--I rarely watch music, but I've seen enough to know what it's about. In my opinion, those women are not exploited. It looks like pure choice to me. So I have no issue with it. I don't think it makes women in general look good, but I also don't think they care very much what I think. Exploitation? No. I don't see any degredation except what certain individuals are doing to themselves.
The violence in rap is far more disturbing, but I have always viewed rap as more of a social statement than as music, per se. It comes from ghettos and slums and trailer parks and it reflects lives that more privileged people will see only in movies. Those places are war zones. Check out the film Rampage about inner cities in the US. The people who live there would rather go to Iraq than live where they're living. Rap reflects this. It reflects injustices in communities that are stigmatized based not on colour, but on economics. These rappers are all those little kids that were abandoned by fathers and left to the welfare system with ill-equipped mothers. Drugs are everywhere. There's never any money. The kids are always hungry. It's a horrible existence. My issue is yes, that's it, that's true, you're saying it...now what? It's like any kind of social statement....there has to be some follow-up, as in, how are we going to fix all this shit going on in the neighbourhoods? And this is why I like Eminem, particularly. Lose Yourself was a really important song, to me, and I think 8 mile was an excellent movie. Despite some of his lyrics, he has represented rap in a positive way. He is the direct opposite of 50cent. I have no respect for 50cent because all he does is glorify violence. Eminem is no saint, but he is someone a lot of people look up to, and I honestly think he should be looked up to. Anyone who tells the typical rap audience, "you can do anything you want to do, man" is someone who is making a positive contribution to the genre. I think a lot of people's reactions to rap are knee-jerk and focus only on the negative. There is a lot to be said for rap.
