i7 only refers to the type/brand of Intel processor. The i7-975 is a quad core but the i7 980X is a 6 core!... i7's range from the 920 to 975...the higher the # the higher the speed...and price!...they are all quad cores, except the 980X... the ones over 950 are top rated!
