Do I need a desktop computer for wireless internet for my laptop?

I am very unfamiliar with internet access and hookup. Today I ordered internet access through Comcast for our two laptops. They said the modem has to be connected to at least one stationary computer, then the router is what allows the others to have access without being connected to a cord. Is this right?

I know someone who has two laptops with wireless internet access at their home and they do not own a desktop computer. I am confused. My desktop isn't working right and I need internet access right now on the laptops. The technician is coming Monday, the 15th. How should it be hooked up?

Thanks in advance.

Could depend upon the provider. I don't have comcast as my internet we have att and the way ours works is the modem is hooked up to the desktop and the router is connected to both, so that the laptops can all work wirelessly.

But no you don't need a desktop to have wireless internet for the laptops, but it probably can vary depending upon the provider. I am sure if you didn't have a desktop computer we would be able to get internet wireless for the laptops.
