How can I keep my external usb hard drive stay on one drive mapping?
Everytime I plug my external usb hard drive (160GB lacie), my drive alternates between K, L or M when I search for it with My Computer? Is there any way to keep the drive consistent? I'm using Windows Vista.
Drive letters will change on USB devices based on how many different USB devices you have connected. They will never stay on one certain drive letter. That is just the way USB works. The order they are pluged in determines what device is assigned to what letter.

- Storage preference. Depending upon the amount of data you have to store, you can choose from a USB external drive to a larger unit that comes with its own operating software. In making this decision you will also need to consider whether you want your hard drive to be portable so you can store the hard drive in a safe place.
- Speed of transfer. The faster spindle speed your external hard drive has, the faster you will be able to perform a backup. Most external hard drives have a speed of 7200 rpm as a minimum specification, with some performing at much higher speeds up to 15,000 rpm. Extremely high speed spindles are only required for large systems and most home or small business usage will get good results with the unit speed of 7200 rpm.
- Reliability. In determining how reliable Bill external drive will be, it is difficult to go past manufacturers with an established track record. Retailers will be able to give you up to date information about this.
