Wireless Desktop!! =)?
What is generally a better wireless connection for my desktop, A PCI card or a USB type Wireless adapter????
I dnt know what is faster USB 2.0 or PCI, please note i have the older PCI slots none of that 2.3 PCI stuff
Opinions vary on which is "better", but the speed of usb 2 and pci are of no consequence for this situation.
Pick whichever type is most convenient for you.
The usb adapter gives easy flexability to move it to another computer (or lose it). The pci card will allow a better antennae should you need one.
HP could lead the market with wireless Desktop PCs
History of HP's Development of Wireless Desktop PCs
In 2003, the Hewlett-Packard Company (better known as HP) announced their plan to integrate wireless silicon technology into their desktop computers. Specifically, HP planned to use the 802.11 wireless silicon products manufactured by Texas Instruments. The effort represented a three-way collaboration between companies; not only were HP and Texas Instruments involved, but Cisco was as well. Specifically, the Cisco Compatible Extensions programme participated in the development of wireless technology for HP desktop computers. The Cisco Compatible Extensions programme was designed to help ensure that products produced by other companies were able to interface with the Cisco AirOne wireless network.
The collaboration between these three companies also addressed the issue of wireless compatibility for HP laptop computers. Historically, HP had sourced their silicon from other companies, such as Atheros and Intel, among others. Without severing those ties, Hewlett-Packard intended to take steps to ensure that their laptops would also be able to connect with the wireless network provided by Cisco AirOne.
Goals, Practical Implications and Considerations
The Hewlett-Packard company had several goals for their creation of wireless desktop PCs. One main goal was the reduction of costs and labour associated with wiring. A second goal was the increased freedom and mobility for users of desktop PCs. The ability for employees and self-employed individuals to quickly and easily move from space to space was thought to be highly attractive.
For Texas Instruments part, their goals overlapped with HP's but they had their own particular areas of focus as well. These included the expansion of their wireless silicon products into the desktop computer market share through products proven to be cost effective and high quality.
Reduced wires have several implications. First, they lessen the amount of environment impact caused by the manufacture, repair and disposal of wires. Second, they eliminate the need for setting up the wires between the desktop computer and the wired Internet access point. This can reduce labor and costs as well as lowering the barriers to Internet use. The lack of wires can also be a strong benefit in places where space is at a premium, and in places where children or pets may cause concern about the safety of the cables.
Ultimately, the creation of a wireless desktop computer can be said to be movement towards bridging the gap between desktop computers and laptop computers. Those who are seeking the reliability, increased storage capacity, and larger monitor size of a desktop computer and who also want the flexibility, ease of movement, and wireless capacity of a laptop computer may find this an attractive option to further examine.
Hewlett-Packard did not limit themselves to only creating wireless desktop computers. Also available are wireless keyboards, mouses, and HP monitors.
